Teaching for Artistic Behavior

Facilitating Art Class  In A Choice Based Classroom  The first important step is to work with the assumption that students have a lot to say visually. Following are facilitator techniques discussed during a USMASS PD I led for visual art teachers.  The workshop was one of several that explore the ideas of a   “ Choice Based Learning Environment ”   How to manage the classroom, develop the curriculum, meet educational standards, and create a meaningful work environment.  1. BPS teacher Lily Holland featured in Valerie Strauss' The Answer Sheet

Answer Sheet Second graders imagine their dream school. It isn’t what you might think.  By Valerie Strauss June 19   Lily Holland teaches second grade in the Boston Public Schools. She wrote the following post as part of a coordinated event last week sponsored by the Massachusetts Teachers Association in which educators, parents and others took actions to show support for traditional public schools and opposition to expanding charter schools in the state.  Dozens of communities, for example, passed resolutions opposing lifting the cap that now exists on charters as part of the dedicated week. Holland wrote the following piece to give voice to a group rarely heard from: second graders. A version of this appeared on the blog of Defending the Early Years , which seeks to rally educators to take action on policies that affect the education of young children. I have permission to republish.  Please follow the link here to read the entire articl...

Tab Student Project : The Book For Kids Second Grade

Questioning The Questions

Students as Questioners : What is a Question? Questions. We ask them when we need directions. We ask them when we don’t understand. Sometimes we ask questions in outrage, other times we ask them in curiosity and wonder. Sometimes questions are rhetorical, other times they are urgent. If we want to help students be questioners, we need to help them understand the types and purposes of questions and ways to use questions effectively. For the next few weeks I’ll be examining models of student questioning and how they can be used to help students develop both understanding and creativity. First and most basically, we need to teach students what a question is. Very young children, as all kindergarten teachers know, have trouble understanding the difference between a story and a question. Without guidance, a suggestion that young children ask questions of a visiting firefighter can result in long stories about vaguely fire-related events. Early childhood educators are accustomed to h...

Assessment in The ART ROOM

Embedding  Assessment  K2 -2nd Grade This is a good example of embedding assessment into the art lesson.  Using  in- process assessment of student learning through questions, challenges, self reflection and peer sharing students show they are able to identify shapes, colors and make images when prompted.
